Post-Block Care
Anesthesia should be achieved within 15 minutes. Monitor the patient at least 30 minutes following the block. If patients with respiratory compromise underwent brachial plexus blocks, consider longer monitoring. Inform other healthcare providers that a nerve block was performed and the patient will have no function in the blocked extremity for up to 8 hours. For patients being discharged, instructions should include expected block recovery and how to watch for complications.
